Transparency--Self-Portrait
Sanah Brown-Bowers is a first-year MFA student in MICA’s Mount Royal School of Art. A photorealist painter and mixed media artist, Sanah’s artworks celebrate Black joy through recounting the stories of her family members and folx from the communities where she has lived (NY, TX and MD). Sanah creates family altars—large scale shadow box portraits with collage, found objects, and memorabilia of Black life from the past. Sanah "uses symbolism to restore hope to a race of people whose history has been forgotten and needs restoration and affirmation” (https://sanahbrownbowers.com/about). Sanah’s solo exhibition, Bloodlines, features a portrait of a local Barber and is on view in the Student Space Gallery in the Lazarus Building at MICA through February 19th.
